Proclamation of independence of the islands of Cape Verde. Aristides Pereira becomes President and Pedro Pires Prime Minister.

 

1976 (10 February)

Signature of cultural, scientific and technical co-operation agreements with France.

 

1977 (2 January)

The African Party for the Independence of Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde (PAIGC) creates a United Council presided over by the Speakers of the Assemblies of the two countries, Joâo Bernardo Vieira (Guinea-Bissau) and Abilio Duarte (Cape Verde).

Rumours of plotting. Arrests and dismissals.

Creation of a national currency, the Escudo.

 

1980 (7 September)

The first Constitution is adopted.

 

1980 (7 December)

General elections. All the candidates represent the single party, the PAIGC.

 

1981 (19 January)

The PAIGC is replaced by the PAICV (African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde). Election of Aristides Pereira as Secretary General of the PAICV.

 

1981 (12 February)

Aristides Pereira is re-elected President of the Republic by the National Assembly. A new Constitution is adopted.

Demonstrations against the agrarian reform project in Santo Antão.

 

1985 (7 December)

General elections. The PAICV wins 94% of the votes.

 

1990 (3-14 April)

Formation of an opposition party, the Movement for Democracy (MPD), following the abrogation of Article 4 of the Constitution on the single-party system.

 

1990 (28 September)

Multi-party system adopted.

 

1991 (12 January)

General elections. Victory of the MPD: 56 seats out of 79. The President of the MPD, Carlos Veiga, becomes Prime Minister.

 

1991 (17 February)

First pluralist presidential election. Election of Antonio Mascarenhas Monteiro (MPD).

 

1991 (25 February)

Amilcar Fernandes Spencer Lopes (MPD) is elected Speaker of the National Assembly.

 

1994 (21 February)

Re-election of Carlos Veiga at the head of the MPD.

 

1995 (17 December)

General elections. The MPD wins 50 seats, the PAICV 21 and the Party for Democratic Convergence (PCD) 1.

 

1996 (21 January)

Municipal elections. Only the MPD presents candidates.

 

1996 (18 February)

Presidential election. Re-election of the only candidate, Antonio Mascarenhas Monteiro.

 

1998 (30 April)

Cabinet re-shuffle with the creation of the post of Vice Prime Minister given to Gualberto do Rosário.

 

2000 (21 February)

Municipal elections. Praia, the capital, and Santa Catarina won by the PAICV.

 

2000 (29 July)

Prime Minister Carlos Veiga gives up his position to stand for the presidential election of 2001.

 

2000 (6 October)

Appointment of Gualberto do Rosário to the post of Prime Minister.

 

2001 (14 January)

General elections.

 

2001 (11 February)

Presidential election.
